About Yako Workshop

Yako Workshop is an actual workshop located in the village of Marikostinovo, in southern Bulgaria.

The name “Marikostinovo” means “Maria’s bones”, and according to local legend, during the Turkish occupation a beautiful woman named Maria refused to fulfill a general’s desires. As punishment, he slaughtered her and scattered her bones across the surrounding hills as an example to the population.

The river Strymon flows near the village, creating a natural pathway to the south that leads all the way to Lake Kerkini. Thousands of birds from hundreds of species find their way there for breeding and shelter during the cold months.

This splattered yet romantic village, with the constant movement of migrating birds and passing TIR trucks, is where we work.

At Yako Workshop, we create decorative items, gifts, tiles, lamps and more, made mainly of scrapped wood, clay, cement, broken bottles and dreams. We do not currently have an e-shop, as most of our items are one-of-a-kind, cannot be reproduced and we have no one —or can afford to hire one— to do the necessary jobs like photo-shooting, editing, uploading, downloading, inserting, cropping, deleting and so on. However, we intend to create an e-shop — or at least try.
